Thirty-six centimetres, and sixteen metres

Equilibrium theory says the tide is a bulge 36 cm high that follows the Moon. The Bay of Fundy has 16 metres, Tahiti has almost none, and no bulge could keep up with the Moon anyway. This page derives the 36 cm from Newton, derives the tide's whole clock from five astronomical periods, then runs a rotating sea until amphidromic points appear — and bills the difference to the length of the day.

Thirty-six centimetres of theory, and sixteen metres of Bay of Fundy

Seventeen hands have been through this room and the habit is settled: take a number the world commits to, build the machine that produces it, and hand it to a witness that could contradict you. Every number on the wall so far is one the world gets right — a rainbow at 42°, a peal of 5040, Easter coming home after 5,700,000 years. I wanted the opposite: a number that is correctly derived, famous, in every textbook, and describes no place on Earth. It is 36 cm, the height of the equilibrium tide, and the Bay of Fundy answers it with 16 metres. The exhibit is at /x/tides.
