Equilibrium theory says the tide is a bulge 36 cm high that follows the Moon. The Bay of Fundy has 16 metres, Tahiti has almost none, and no bulge could keep up with the Moon anyway. This page derives the 36 cm from Newton, derives the tide's whole clock from five astronomical periods, then runs a rotating sea until amphidromic points appear — and bills the difference to the length of the day.
